2016 is an exciting year for avid readers. For the past couple of years, Hollywood has been seeing plenty of big screen adaptations and that trend is set to continue. This year, some of the highly-anticipated movies based on books include “The Girl on the Train”, “Me Before You” and the Divergent series installment “Allegiant.” To learn what other books are being made into movies this 2016, read on.

The movie tells the story of 16-year-old Cassie Sullivan who struggles to survive in a world destroyed by an alien invasion. Chloe Grace Moretz plays the lead role and acts alongside Liev Schreiber and Maika Monroe. The movie was released January 15.

In this love story from the romance master, a bachelor falls for the girl next door. The movie stars Benjamin Walker, Teresa Palmer and Tom Welling, and will be released on February 5.

3. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith

The name says it all. This film is a twisted spin on the Jane Austen classic centering on heroine Elizabeth Bennet who protects her family and town from the undead. She is played by actress Lily James. The movie is slated to be released on February 5.

“How to Be Single” highlights the adventures of Manhattanite Julie as she travels the world to study the dating habits of other women. The movie also features the lives of her single friends back in New York. The movie has an all-star cast composed of Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson, Dan Stevens, Leslie Mann, Lily Collins and Alison Brie. It will hit theaters on February 12.

5. The Taliban Shuffle by Kim Barker

The movie which is now titled “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” follows the experiences of journalist Kim Barker while working in Afghanistan and Pakistan during the early 2000s. Tina Fey produced the adaptation and also stars in the much-awaited film. She is joined by Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman and Nicholas Braun. “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” has a release date of March 4.

6. Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll

“Through the Looking Glass” is the sequel to the author’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Six months later, Alice sets off to another adventure through the looking glass and meets a new set of characters such as the Jabberwocky. Mia Wasikowska and Johnny Depp return to the movie as they reprise their roles as Alice and the Mad Hatter. “Through the Looking Glass” will be released on May 27.

7. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates by Mike and Dave Stangle

Brothers Mike and Dave Stangle put out a Craigslist ad for wedding dates. The ad goes viral and the movie follows their experience as they search for dates around the country. Mike and Dave are played by Adam DeVine and Zac Efron. Anna Kendrick also appears in the film as Aubrey Plaza. The movie will hit theaters on July 8.

8. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

The movie narrates the tale of a young boy dealing with bullies and his mother’s illness by inventing a fantasy world filled with monsters and other creatures. Felicity Jones plays the role of the boy’s mother. Other members of the cast include Liam Neeson and Sigourney Weaver. “A Monster Calls” has a release date of October 14.

9. Inferno by Dan Brown

“Inferno” is the continuation of “The Da Vinci Code” series. It follows Robert Langdon’s latest adventure as he tries to stop another international scheme by following clues hidden in Dante’s “The Divine Comedy.” Tom Hanks makes a return by playing Langdon. Felicity Jones costars as Sienna Brooks and Ben Foster plays the villain. “Inferno” will hit theaters on October 14.

10. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

This is the movie that all Harry Potter fans are waiting for. The film revisits the wizarding world as it tells the story of Newt Scamander, the author of the textbook that Potter and his classmates would study. Award-winning actor Eddie Redmayne stars in this trilogy. The first installment will be released on November 18.

11. Silence by Shusaku Endo

“Silence” is set in 17th-century Japan and tells the story of Jesuits trying to bring Christianity into the Asian country. It is directed by Martin Scorsese who also wrote a foreword to the original novel. Andrew Garfield plays the lead role of Father Rodrigues and is joined by Adam Driver and Liam Neeson who also play priests. The film’s release is still unannounced but it is set to hit theaters on November.

12. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

The film is based on the young adult novel that narrates the tale of a teenager named Jacob who made an unexpected discovery on an island near Wales, UK. He discovered ruins of a strange house and decides to explore into its dark past. Renowned film director Tim Burton spearheads the project. His cast includes Eva Green and Asa Butterfield. “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is set for release on Christmas Day 2016.
